How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: The PASS Method Explained (Don't Panic!)
We have touched on this before, but when it comes to fire safety, repetition is key. At Fire Safety Supply, your safety and the safety of your property is our top priority. That's why we want to remind you about the PASS method – a simple, easy-to-remember technique for using a fire extinguisher effectively.
Before you start, remember these crucial points:
- Fire safety first: Only attempt to extinguish a fire if it is small, contained, and you have a clear escape route. If you have any doubts, evacuate immediately and call the fire department.
- The right extinguisher: Ensure you have the correct type of extinguisher for the fire (e.g., Class A for ordinary combustibles, Class B for flammable liquids).
- Regular maintenance: Inspect your fire extinguishers regularly and have them serviced or recharged as needed.
Now, let's break down the PASS method:
P - PULL the pin. This unlocks the extinguisher and allows you to discharge it.
A - AIM low. Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not the flames themselves.
S - SQUEEZE the lever. This releases the extinguishing agent.
S - SWEEP from side to side. Move the nozzle horizontally in a sweeping motion to cover the entire base of the fire.
Important Reminders:
- Stay low: Smoke and heat rise, so stay low to the ground for better visibility and to avoid inhaling smoke.
- Maintain distance: Stand back a safe distance from the fire (usually 6-8 feet).
- Short bursts: Use short bursts of the extinguishing agent to conserve it and ensure you have enough to put out the fire.
- Evacuate if necessary: If the fire doesn't extinguish quickly or starts to spread, evacuate immediately and call the fire department.
Fire safety is an ongoing commitment. By understanding and practicing the PASS method, you can be prepared to act quickly and effectively in the event of a fire.
